H1B work visa photo — requirements and how to make one

Quick answer

H1B consular applicants upload the standard U.S. visa photo to their DS-160 form: 600 × 600 px JPEG, plain white background, face filling 50–69% of the frame, neutral expression, no glasses. Note: the I-129 petition filed by your employer does not require a photo — only the DS-160 consular step does.

The camera coaches you live on:

  • Head tilt & angle
  • Lighting & shadows
  • Head size in frame
  • Background plainness
  • Blur / sharpness

Most issues get caught in the viewfinder, before you tap shutter.

We never alter facial features — only crop, resize, and clean the background.

Frequently asked

Does the H1B petition (I-129) need a photo?

No. The I-129 petition your employer files with USCIS doesn't require a photo. The photo is only needed for the DS-160 consular processing step — when you go to a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad for the H1B visa stamp.

I'm doing a change of status inside the U.S. — do I need a photo?

Change of status (I-539 / change-of-status I-129) processed inside the U.S. doesn't require a visa photo because no visa stamp is issued. You only need a DS-160 photo if you leave and re-enter with a fresh visa stamp.

H1B stamping abroad — what does my embassy expect?

The DS-160 you complete before the appointment requires the photo upload. Most embassies (including India, China, the Philippines) accept the digital upload and don't ask for a printed copy — but check your specific consular post's instructions.

I'm renewing my H1B — do I need a new photo?

Yes. Each new DS-160 (every visa stamping, every renewal) requires a photo taken within the last 6 months. The old DS-160 photo doesn't carry over.

What about H4 dependents (spouse, children)?

Each H4 applicant files their own DS-160 with their own photo — same spec as the H1B principal. Our tool handles photos for any age, including infants.
