DS-160 photo: requirements and how to make one online

Quick answer

DS-160 accepts a square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, under 240 KB, with your face filling 50–69% of the frame on a plain white background. You upload this photo directly inside the DS-160 form, just before you submit.

The camera coaches you live on:

  • Head tilt & angle
  • Lighting & shadows
  • Head size in frame
  • Background plainness
  • Blur / sharpness

Most issues get caught in the viewfinder, before you tap shutter.

We never alter facial features — only crop, resize, and clean the background.

Official requirements

  • JPEG file, square aspect ratio (1:1)
  • Between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels (DS-160 upload accepts this range)
  • File size ≤ 240 KB
  • Head 50–69% of the image height, centered
  • Plain white or off-white background
  • Neutral expression, both eyes open, looking at the camera
  • Taken within the last 6 months

Common rejection reasons

  • DS-160 upload page won't accept files outside the size range
  • Photo isn't square — the upload tool will crop and you'll lose head positioning
  • Background looks coloured or shadowed on the embassy review screen
  • Wearing eyeglasses (rejected at the consular interview)
  • Smiling with teeth, or a non-neutral expression
  • Old photo — appearance has changed since it was taken

Frequently asked

What file format does the DS-160 photo upload accept?

JPEG (.jpg) only. PNG, HEIC, and other formats will be rejected by the upload step. Our tool delivers a JPEG by default.

Where do I attach the photo inside the DS-160?

On the 'Photo' page of the DS-160, just before the application review step. The upload tool gives you a chance to crop the image; if our photo is already 600 × 600, no crop is needed.

What if DS-160 rejects my photo at the upload step?

The most common cause is the file being outside the size range (under 600 × 600 or over 240 KB) or not being a JPEG. Our output meets the spec — re-try with the file we delivered, not a re-export from another tool.

Do I also need a printed photo?

Most U.S. consulates only need the digital photo you upload to DS-160. Some posts request a printed backup at the interview — check your specific embassy. Our tool can deliver a 2 × 2 inch print file alongside the digital one.

Does the DS-160 photo also work for visa renewal?

Yes. Renewals (including F1, B1/B2, and H1B) submit the same DS-160 with a fresh photo taken within the last 6 months. Same spec, same file.
